Why Not An E-Collar
Why Not An E-Collar
The traditional e-collar (also called an Elizabethan collar or "cone of shame") has been the standard tool for post-surgery wound protection for decades. It prevents licking โ but at a significant cost to your dog's comfort and mental state.
What e-collars do to your dog:
โ Causes stress, anxiety, and disorientation
โ Restricts eating, drinking, and sleep
โ Bumps into walls and furniture
โ Hard plastic can irritate the neck
โ Difficult and stressful to put on
โ Prevents natural movement and comfort
Post-surgery stress can interfere with recovery and increase the risk of complications. A calmer dog heals more comfortably.
Developed by Dr. Aya Hideshima of Vetโs Labo, Vetโs Wear provides the wound protection veterinarians require โ without the stress, restriction, and discomfort commonly associated with traditional e-collars.
โ Gentle swaddling comfort
โ Eat and drink normally
โ Sleep comfortably in any position
โ Full freedom of movement
โ Soft, fabric โ no irritation
โ Easy zip-on, zip-off design
Material
Material
Fabric
80% nylon ยท 20% polyurethane โ a technical mesh blend chosen specifically for medical-grade use. The combination gives the suit its form-fitting stretch without sagging, while remaining lightweight enough for all-day wear during recovery.
Key material properties
Breathable lightweight mesh
Allows airflow to the wound area, preventing moisture buildup โ essential for healthy incision healing and reducing the risk of post-operative infection.
Anti-microbial treatment
The fabric is treated to resist bacterial growth โ particularly important for dogs with compromised immune systems or those prone to skin infections.
Anti-tick & anti-flea properties
The fabric's tight weave and treatment provide an additional layer of protection against ticks and fleas during outdoor use โ making Vet's Wear suitable beyond recovery for everyday outings.
Hypoallergenic
Suitable for dogs with sensitive skin. The fabric is free from harsh dyes or irritating finishes โ particularly important when worn directly against post-surgical skin.
Highly stretchable โ form-fitting without pressure
The suit stretches to accommodate your dog's natural movement without bunching or constricting. It stays snug without creating pressure points โ crucial for dogs recovering from abdominal surgery.
Design Features
Design Features
Full-length back zipper
Runs the entire length of the suit for easy dressing and undressing โ including for vet checkups without full removal. The back fastening keeps all hardware away from the wound area.
Female/ Male-specific urination opening
Positioned for female/ male anatomy โ allows your dog to urinate without removing the suit. No disruption to recovery, no re-dressing stress after every bathroom break.
Machine washable
Easy to clean and quick to dry โ essential for maintaining hygiene during a recovery period where multiple washes per week may be needed.
FAQ
FAQ
Q: Can my dog wear this overnight?
A: Yes. The breathable mesh and soft fabric are designed for continuous wear โ including overnight. The suit should be checked and, if necessary, changed daily to maintain hygiene around the wound. Monitor your dog during the first night to ensure she is comfortable and not attempting to remove the suit.
Q: How does this compare to an e-collar for actual wound protection?
A: Vet's Wear provides a physical barrier against licking and scratching that is equivalent to an e-collar for abdominal and body wounds. It is particularly effective for post-spay incisions. For wounds on the face, neck, or limbs โ where the suit doesn't cover โ an e-collar may still be needed. Consult your vet if unsure.
Q: My dog had a spay/ neuter โ is this the right product?
A: Yes. Post-spay or neuter recovery is one of the primary use cases Vet's Wear was designed for. The suit covers the abdominal incision site completely, prevents licking and scratching, and allows your dog to eat, drink, sleep, and use the bathroom normally throughout recovery.
Q: Can she/ he go to the toilet without removing it?
A: Yes โ the female version includes a urination opening specifically designed for female anatomy, so your dog can urinate without the suit being removed. For defecation, the suit may need to be partially unzipped at the rear โ check with your vet on their preference for your dog's specific recovery needs.
Q: How long should she wear it?
A: The standard post-spay recovery period is 10โ14 days, after which most vets confirm the incision is fully closed. Continue wearing until your vet gives clearance. If used for skin conditions or allergy-related licking outside of surgery, the suit can be worn as needed on an ongoing basis.
Q: Can it be used for non-surgical purposes?
Yes โ Vet's Wear is also suitable for dogs with hot spots, skin allergies, rashes, or chronic licking. The anti-microbial fabric provides ongoing skin protection. It also works as a shed defender during shedding season โ containing loose fur at home and in the car โ and as a protective bodysuit for outdoor outings.
